Obituary of Marvin Clyde Gurganus, Jr.

Marvin Clyde Gurganus Jr., passed away unexpectedly from a serious infection complication on April 3, 2023. He was only 77 years old. The family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden passing.

Marv is survived and missed by his loving wife, Dawn (Smith) of 41 years; and his adored daughters, Whitney (James) White and Blair (Hunter) Lang; grandchildren Ellie and Liam White, and Jack and Savannah Lang; his brother Patrick (Jane) Gurganus, niece Jill (James) Christopher, and nephew Scott (Laura) Gurganus.

Marv was born on November 8, 1945, in Culpeper, VA to Josephine and Marvin C. Gurganus Sr. He received a business degree from the University of Virginia, class of 1969.  After graduating, he worked in sales and marketing in the beverage industry for more than 30 years.

In addition to being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Marv was always described as the perfect “Southern Gentleman”. He was the best dressed person in the room and kind to everyone he met and knew. He had a passion for golf, traveling, UVA sports, and the Washington Redskins.  His taste in music was impeccable, loving everything from doo-wop and Motown to Pitbull and Jack Johnson. He was known for his bad “dad” jokes and singing loud at church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in honor of Marv to King Street Cats of Alexandria, VA.
