Dear Peggy and family, I am so very sorry to hear this news. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dennis was a good friend in graduate school - we even lived in the same apartment complex the first year and carpooled on occasion - here is a photo I took of some of us at the reunion we had in 2006 - our 30th.

Thinking of all you guys each day. Sending much love and many prayers. You all have been so kind to me over the years - helping Erin and I get home early from that trip to Australia to letting my sis and I stay at your place while my mom was In the hospital in Charlotte. Love to all, Bryna and family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I have many fond memories of so many conversations with Dennis over the years from those on the phone, at LDI, or his visit to our department when we received Hallmark HWE. He had to endure my relentless pursuit of a safe patient handling program and I will be forever grateful for his leadership and support with that and improving patient experience over the 20 years that I served in a leadership role. I always loved his honesty and transparency. He will truly be missed. With Deepest Sympathy, Anjie Vickers

Peggy, you and Dennis have been dear friends and we are most thankful for the time we spent together.
Dennis changed lives for the better. Through his work. Through his friendship. And for those who were blessed enough to be caught up in the wake that he created. He was a positive energy giver for so many of us.
He loved more than most. Gave more than most. Made difference more than most.
We love you and family

I worked with Dennis when he was CEO at Frye. I was a young CEO at another hospital and was always inspired by his attention to patient and employee satisfaction. He was a good man. Sympathies to his family.

My sympathy to the family of Dennis John Phillips. I remember when Dennis was the CEO at Frye Regional Medical Center, where I continue to serve as a staff chaplain. I had done my chaplaincy residency at CMC and remember thinking when Dennis moved to Charlotte that Frye’s loss was CMC’s gain. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Like Bill & Becky Oliver, I met Dennis through Hays Waldrop and IHES. Dennis elevated every meeting I attended with him. His equal measures warmth, intellect, insight and character made every meeting better because he was there. Playing golf with Dennis was always a joy. He loved the game, but he loved being with others in a spirit of friendly competition even more. As a dinner companion, he made every meal a joyful occasion. Heaven was made even more wonderful with his arrival and I have no doubt he will look after his family from a distance perhaps not as far away as we might think. Thank God for people like Dennis, a too rare breed that we all need to emulate. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Peggy and all of the family, I was shocked to hear of Dennis' death. We have missed him and your family in Hickory from the day he left Frye. As the years have passed, we appreciated more and more the great job he did not only at Frye, but in the community making Hickory a better place. He was always efficient, but fun and I valued having him as a friend and colleague. He was responsible for our company to start working at Frye which we have continued to do for 35 years and I will always be grateful. My very sincere condolences to all of you and know that Dennis left a considerable mark with a great life that we are all thankful for.

Dennis was the type of friend you wish you had known all your life. About 15 years ago, we met thru a great organization, Institute of Healthcare Executives, and every meeting included fun times with him and Peggy. We admired him as a healthcare leader, as a family man, and as a friend. He was even a resource for us as we dealt with Cancer in our family, putting him on our list of Angels that reach out when you most need them. May God bless his family. For sure his fun, positive attitude can only compliment the peace of being with the Lord.

My most sincere condolence to Dennis's family and friends. I am Dennis's 1st cousin, Gayle Slagle, his Mom and my Dad were sister and brother. I haven't seen Dennis in Decades, however, remember playing in our grandfather's backyard and garden for hours on end back in the early-mid 60's. I will always remember those times. REST IN PEACE !!!

So very sorry. I worked at CMC-NE and met with Dennis many times over my years there. Truly a kind and compassionate EVP. Always asking, “is it right for the patients?” He would often tease me about attending UVA! The biggest smiles were always when speaking of his family. My condolences to all who were lucky enough to know him, most especially to his family.

Dennis was the most talented and driven healthcare executive that I have ever known. I had the opportunity to work with he and Ed Rush for 16 years. Now that I am a Hospital President/CEO myself, I find myself doing things the way I learned things from this great mentor. There are many of us who had the good fortune to work under Dennis that have moved into CEO roles. He was brilliant . He also loved his family and would speak of Peggy and the kids lovingly. He loved Christmas and I remember when he bought Peggy a Lexus and hid it in my garage. I also remember when he took us to NY city for a nice weekend. He was a great leader and family man. He deserved much more time.
God Bless Peggy, the kids and Grandchildren .

Our deepest sympathy for your loss. We both worked with Dennis at FRMC for many years and remember him so fondly. He definitely left the world a better place through all his efforts at improving the state of healthcare as well as caring deeply for the patients and families. He often spoke with such love and pride of his family. He never forgot a face and called us both by name when we saw him at CMC years later. I will never forget the day I was buying soccer shoes for my son at the old athletic store in downtown Hickory and he came careening through the store on inline skates, laughing and saying "Susan, you think I can do this?"
May all your wonderful memories of Dennis bring you comfort in the days to come.

Mr. Phillips was truly a wonderful man. I only worked for him a very short time at FRMC but he knew every staff member by their first name. He would always take time to provide us with a hand written note when he noticed that we had gone above and beyond on regular duties. I was privileged to have worked as a RN under his leadership and I was even more privileged to have been a patient at Levine Cancer Center prior to his retirement. My deepest condolences to your family. He was a great man who will be greatly missed.
